Welcome to Preschool! Keep up to date with some of the exciting things we have been learning and any year group letters.

Admissions Policy

It is our intention to make our  Preschool accessible to children and families from all sections of the local community.

We aim to ensure that all sections of our community have access to the Preschool through open, fair and clearly communicated procedures.

In order to achieve this aim, we operate the following admissions policy.

  • We ensure that the existence of the Preschool is widely advertised in places accessible to all sections of the community.
  • We ensure that information about our Preschool is accessible - in written and spoken form - and, where appropriate, in different languages. Where necessary, we will try to provide information in Braille, or through signing or an interpreter.
  • We arrange our waiting list in birth order. In addition take into account if siblings already attend Abbots Farm Infant School.
  • The Preschool is open to every family in the community.
  • No more than 24 children may attend at any one session.
  • Children are admitted on their 3rd birthday, dependent upon the availability of space. However, funding does not start until the term after they are 3.
  • Due to the school admissions policy of all children starting school in the year that they are 5 most children start with us during the Autumn term. We are unable to keep places open for those children who have either a Spring or Summer birthday. However, they are given priority should places become available and usually can have the sessions of their choice in the following Autumn term.
  • Children may attend Abbots Farm Preschool for between 2 and 10 sessions per week, these sessions are 3 hours long. Children are expected to attend a minimum of 2 sessions a week. Less than this does not give enough continuity for a child to settle adequately within the Preschool.
  • We welcome children regardless of their gender, special educational needs, disabilities, background, religion, ethnicity or competence in spoken English. We will liaise fully with parents and professionals to ensure that it would be in the child’s best interests to attend the group.
  • Parents/carers are encouraged to visit with their child shortly before admission is due, and are invited to attend a ‘Stay and Play’ session.
  • A home visit must be completed before their start date and all paperwork returned.
  • Funding is available for children who are already 3 and 4 years old. We will inform parents if they are eligible. (Funding available term after the child is 3).
  • If a child is to leave our setting before moving on to school, or to reduce the number of sessions attended, parents must give at least four school weeks’ notice of the leaving date in writing. Fees will be payable (or funding grant claimed by us), until that date.
  • We are flexible about attendance patterns and wherever possible accommodate the needs of individual children and families.
  • The nursery education funding rules state that 'I understand my child could lose their funded place if they do not attend regularly without a reason being provided for their absence'. Therefore, if your child has not attended half of their sessions in any half term period (usually 6 or 7 weeks) they will lose their place at the Preschool unless they have a valid reason (e.g. letter from doctor in the case of serious illness or holiday). If your child has not attended Preschool for 3 weeks without any explanation we reserve the right to offer their sessions to another child after contacting you and discussing the situation.

Your child will be entitled to receive 15 hours funding the term following their third birthday. This is claimed as 5 x 3 hour sessions for 38 weeks of the year (term time). You will need to complete a form at the beginning of each term. If you are not entitled to funding or they are under three the session rate is £15.
Claiming from two providers – You are able to divide your funding between two settings, ensuring that the total does not exceed 15 universal hours. You need to name the additional provider on the funding form.
We offer wrap around care in our Bug Club which opens at 7:45am and closes at 6:00pm. The 30 hour entitlement can be used for Bug Club hours. Terms and conditions apply. Please speak to the school office for more details.

About our Preschool

It is our aim to provide care and an early learning environment which is tailored to each individual child’s needs, in safe, secure, happy and relaxed surroundings.
We adhere to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which is made up of a statutory framework for the Early Years. This sets the standards of learning, development and care for children from birth to five years. We provide a place for your child to develop a strong sense of belonging and to build their self-esteem and confidence. With a high regard given to your child’s personalised learning and through encouragement we help them to reach their full potential socially, physically and intellectually.
We have a teacher and an Early Years Educator who lead the room. They are supported by a team of Preschool Assistants. All our staff are qualified and have a high regard for their own professionalism. Our staff continue their personal development through various courses, updating their skills and keeping abreast of new ideas and developments. We carry out annual performance reviews, which enable us to identify ongoing training requirements as well as regular progress reviews and staff meetings.
The staff are deployed to cover the correct ratios in each area of the preschool, this ensures that your child’s needs are fully met; safety and security is of paramount importance. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with parents and have an open door policy. Your child is allocated a Key Person who will build a secure relationship with them and compile their Learning Journey using a variety of narrative and photographic observations. We invite you to share with us any observations or personal achievements you may have noticed at home.
We adopt a positive approach in welcoming your child to our Preschool. This ensures they settle into the routines as easily as possible. We find a few short visits to preschool prior to starting with us will help your child familiarise themselves with their new environment.
